Meet other college writing instructors in the Metro-Boston area.

The Boston Rhetoric and Writing Network hosts professional meetings and social events, including an annual Summer Institute. We don't have official members, but we encourage you to register on this site so that you can participate and stay informed.

In June of 2011, approximately twenty Boston-area writing program administrators and scholars convened to create a new professional organization: BRAWN, the Boston Rhetoric and Writing Network.

The Boston Rhetoric and Writing Network provides free and local professional development and learning opportunities to college writing instructors. There are no membership requirements, but please register for events that require it.

BRAWN supports a listserv, regular professional events and social gatherings, and the BRAWN Summer Institute, held annually in May. BRAWN is currently in the process of registering as a 503(b) non-profit organization.

12th Annual Summer Institute

Friday, June 2 and Saturday June 3, 2023

Keynote speakers: Jennifer Beard (Boston University) and Mya Poe (Northeastern University)

This is a free, two-day professional development seminar, open by application to teachers and scholars of writing at any institution of higher education in the Boston Area.

The Summer Institute is for Boston-area instructors whose primary focus is teaching college writing. First-time participants, teachers at 2-year colleges, graduate-student teachers, and part-time instructors are encouraged to apply, as are experienced faculty.

The two days will include interactive, hands-on workshops facilitated by local composition scholars with readings distributed in advance. Participants will choose specific workshops to attend, in addition to the keynote addresses, a BRAWN general meeting, and time for informal conversation and socializing. Breakfast and lunch are included both days. The 2023 Institute will be hosted by Harvard University.

The Institute will be limited to 60 participants. All Institute readings are included free of charge. Priority will be given to applicants who plan to attend both days.

To apply, please log in or register and click the link on the dashboard page. Deadline for applications is April 24. Participants will be notified of acceptance by May 3.
